It was a rainy Round 2 of the Novice Drift Series, but despite the weather, 21 competitors still registered in the two classes available for this leg: The Novice Class which saw 14 drivers and the Open Class which had a pool of 12 drivers.
The morning was dedicated to practice runs for the competitors in order to familiarize themselves with the track before the Drivers’ Briefing at noon, the Qualifying Runs and the exciting Tandem Battles after.
The Judges for this round were pro drifters Audel Sison of Team Autocraft, Boodie Dabasol of GMW Team and John Boban of Driftmob Team. Chief Scrutineer and Head Steward was Lateral D Champion Alex Perez of Team Yellowcab.
As we watched them practice, we noticed that there were changes made in the lay-out that actually served to make things more interesting, not only for the spectators, but also for the drivers who joined.
We couldn’t help but notice a marked improvement as well in the Novice drivers’ skills, as there were less spins and swerving happening compared to Round 1 last March, in spite of the more challenging track.
This only proved that the Novice drivers were leveling up in their game, but the weather wasn’t cooperating, and by the middle of the afternoon, the once threatening clouds already started to pour. Now here, we saw most of the Novice Class competitors struggle to adjust to the now very wet track conditions.
The rain also affected the Open Class drifters despite being more advanced in skill than their Novice counterparts, as they were only able to practice earlier in the day, when it was still dry.
These prompted the judges to award them an extra practice run each in the trickier wet surface conditions, before they started their own qualifying runs.
Fortunately for us, the change in track surface did not deter the drift warriors from giving the crowd a great show in their solo runs while prepping themselves for the tandem battles that lay ahead.
